WHSmith begins accepting digital newspaper vouchers with PayPoint and i-movo

Industry sources say major retailers will likely follow WHSmith in integrating the service

WHSmith stores can now accept digital newspaper vouchers following a deal with PayPoint-owned i-movo, creating greater competition for independent shops.

From 31 March, WHSmith introduced the i-movo service to all of its UK stores, also allowing it to accept i-movo money-off vouchers created by partnered suppliers.

The decision brings the total number of stores accepting digital newspaper vouchers, used by titles including the Guardian, i and Daily Mail, to 61,500. Payzone, PayPoint and epay terminals include i-movo as standard, meaning a majority of independent stores already have access to the service.

While widespread in independents, a lack of acceptance of digital paper vouchers in supermarkets and previously in WHSmith has been described as one of biggest barriers preventing more publishers from switching from paper vouchers to digital. However, industry sources told Better Retailing that more major retailers are likely to follow WHSmiths in integrating the service.

Jo Toolan, managing director for payments and client services at PayPoint said: “Our solutions for brands and publishers are now extremely mature and well proven.”

The i-movo vouchers are available to use on staffed and self-checkouts alike. A spokesperson for WHSmith attributed this to the multiple’s ongoing efforts towards sustainability. WHSmith chief information officer Lyndon Hearn commented: “WHSmith is committed to delivering fast and convenient store experiences for our customers, while also continually reducing our impact on the environment.”

The introduction of i-movo in WHSmith means that i-movo digital vouchers can now be redeemed in 77% of UK post codes.
