A retailer in the Midlands is using new security camera technology to help reduce shoplifting offences in his stores.
Rav Garcha installed the software in two of his Nisa stores this month.
Created by a company called Veesion, the software uses artificial intelligence to spot common gestures shoplifters make, such as moving their hands from the shelves to their pockets or a bag. Staff are then alerted through a mobile phone notification.
More than 300 incidents of abuse against shop staff since new law
“My anxiety has come down,” Garcha told Better Retailing. “Since the pandemic, people are bringing their own shopping bags in. I’ve installed the software at my stores in Shrewsbury and Worcester. When we see a notification, we can get hold of the person. The cost for up to nine cameras was £200 per month.”
