United Wholesale Scotland (UWS) and United Wholesale Grocers (UWG) will longer accept personal debit and credit card payments in depot, while implementing a 1% surcharge on commercial card transactions.
The two Scottish wholesalers made the announcement to customers in January through notices in their depots, seen by Better Retailing. The decision was implemented by UWS on 16 January, while the changes will take affect for UWG customers from 23 January.

For UWG customers, the 1% surcharge will also apply to American Express payments. Payments through cash, cheque and newly introduced EchoPay services at both wholesalers will be exempt from the 1% charge. The EchoPay service allows retailers to pay their invoice through a smartphone app.
In its notice, UWG said: “As you are aware, UWG are always striving to keep our prices the lowest in the marketplace. To maintain this objective, we are making some slight changes in the way we accept card payments going forward.
“We are introducing a new and easy payment: United Pay – powered by Echopay. This service will not financially impact the majority of our customers due to the nature of payment methods used previously.”
