The traditional newsagent store type remains in demand in the current market, according to Christie & Co’s retail managing director, Steve Rodell.
He told RN: “Convenience remains robust because customers are always in need of the products that are being sold, whether it be milk or bread. So, there is still very much a place for the smaller units.”
The comments come after the publication of Christie & Co’s business outlook for 2019, which revealed £814m was spent on reinvestment in convenience retail in 2018.
“Convenience is an evolving experience,” he said. “This provides an opportunity for smaller independents who can do their own thing.
“If they’ve got the ability to source their own products and sell them at competitive prices, they will be able to offer a point of difference to their local customers.”
However, for the wider market, the most popular store is between 2,000-3,000sq ft.
“These are the types of stores that can accommodate fresh food and storage space,” added Rodell.
“The convenience network is really well placed to take advantage of this, especially if retailers are able to store parcels.”
