Trade union Usdaw is using 'Respect for Shopworkers Week' (12-18 November) to urge the public to support the protection of shopworkers by writing a letter to their local MP or government.
Usdaw's group of Labour MPs have tabled an amendment to the Offensive Weapons Bill that makes it an offence to assault, threaten or abuse a shop worker who is preventing an illegal sale of acid or knives. The amendment is backed by retail employers, but doesn't yet have the support of the government.
Fears are rising as the government continues to pass new laws to restrict the sale of acid and knives, but there is no protection for shop workers who will have to enforce the new law at the checkout.
To pledge your support, you can send a drafted Email and add your own experience of violence, threats and abuse against shopworkers.
