Academy in action follow-up
Each year as part of the IAA’s Academy in Action programme, we visit 10 independent retailers to help them make simple improvements in their stores in order to increase sales and profits.
IAA advice
1Place ‘No ID, no sale’ signs prominently to deter underage sales
2Ensure age-restricted products are not displayed close to other items
3Implement daily temperature checks to improve food safety standard
The results
“It’s become easier to manage attempts for underage purchases because the age-restriction signs are very visible and work as a deterrent. We’ve started checking the fridges and freezers regularly using checklists and signing the refusal log weekly, which has made us more organised and efficient. We’ve moved the sweets on the till away from the vaping products, which is safer and makes them stand out more. We’re now better prepared and sales of vaping products have grown by 10%.”
