Thieves target Smith News deliveries

Tote boxes and collectables are being stolen from Smiths News Deliveries in Sussex

Thieves are targeting Smiths News-supplied stores in the Sussex area, snatching tote boxes and collectables. Better Retailing understands that a number of retailers have had their deliveries targeted over multiple days. Criminals are allegedly following Smiths News delivery vans and looting unattended boxes dropped outside premises.

In some instances, the criminals opened the totes and took collectables. In others they took the whole box.

More secure deliveries

Referencing the incidents near Gatwick and Crawley, a spokesperson for Smiths News said: “These thefts have occurred subsequent to the completion of deliveries by our drivers and their departure from the premises. We have engaged with retailers to explore the implementation of more secure delivery points for their shipments, aiming to prevent further incidents.

“We understand the significance of safeguarding our deliveries and the merchandise entrusted to us by our customers. While we refrain from commenting on individual cases, we strongly urge affected retailers to promptly report any incidents to the police. Moreover, should our assistance be solicited to support any investigations, Smiths News will fully support.”

The police and local police and crime commissioner have been made aware of the thefts. Better Retailing understands the Fed is also working to warn and support members in the area.
