Telford retailer Julie Kaur is the winner of energy drink supplier Boost Drinks‘ Local Legends competition.

Kaur, owner of Jules Convenience, took home the prize of £20,000 at Boost’s Platinum Party in London on 18 November. The party also marked Boost’s 20th anniversary.

Judges, who included NFRN vice president Jason Birks and senior Boost stakeholders, picked Kaur ahead of nearly 200 other entrants due to the fundraising efforts she undertook during the pandemic, as well as offering a delivery service to local residents who were unable to shop for essentials in person.

Kaur plans to use her winnings to set up a community café and meeting area in Telford, to boost community sprit and encourage residents to learn new skills.

Commenting on her win, she said: “It’s amazing to have been recognised by Boost Drinks. There were so many amazing retailers nominated so it’s a privilege to be announced as the winner. I was also incredibly happy to see so much diversity, moreover so many women shortlisted. I can’t wait to put my plans in motion!”

Bob Singh of Nisa Barmston in Barmston, East Yorkshire, won the second prize of £2,000, while Divyesh Patel of Tower Stores Off License in New Brighton, Wirral was awarded the third prize of £1,000.

Singh plans to use his winnings to put on community events, while Patel intends to expand his store’s delivery service.

Simon Gray, Boost founder and CEO, said: “The competition really was the perfect example of Boost’s vision in action – energising everybody, in every way. I’m so pleased that we were able to come together to celebrate the last two decades at our Platinum Party after the challenging 18 months we’ve all had.

“Congratulations to all of the local legends who were shortlisted. It really was incredibly hard selecting a winner as we received some brilliant nominations and applications from across the country. There were some incredible stories to tell and we’re immensely proud of everyone who entered.”
