Environmental Sustainability – Academy in Action follow-up

Last year, the IAA and JTI visited Jack Matthews’ store in Quorn, Leicestershire, to discuss the growing demand to operate more sustainably. Three months on, we find out what he’s achieved

Each year as part of the IAA’s Academy in Action programme, we visit 12 independent retailers to help them make simple improvements in their stores in order to increase sales and profits. Last year, we visited Jack Matthew’s in Quorn, Leicestershire, along with JTI’s Ruth Forbes, to look and create an action plan to better help and train Jack and his staff to be more sustainable. We catch up with Jack to find out what’s changed since our visit.

Jack’s results

“We’ve just completed a major refit and we consulted customers who had approached us previously about offering loose products, and we now stock rice, porridge oats and muesli loose. We also expanded our household range to include more refillable options, like laundry detergent. Finally, we installed LED lighting and light sensors in our stock room, which switch off after 90 seconds of inactivity, helping us make a projected annual saving of £100, but we’re expecting more.”
