A wholesaler specialising in Spanish food imports has launched into independent convenience.
Mevalco, which also supplies restaurants, delis, farm shops and supermarkets, took the decision to supply into independent retail following an increase in demand during the pandemic. It has created a range specifically targeted for independent retail, which includes meats, cheeses, olives, condiments and seafood.
Founder David Menendez told Better Retailing: “We have more than 1,000 products available to retailers, with packaging which can stand out on the shelves. In the UK customers have traditionally leaned more towards products from France and Spain has been underrepresented in the past.

“However, Spanish imports have become more diverse and offer good value for money without compromising on quality. It’s an exciting new market.”
Describing the top lines retailers should stock, Menendez said: “It changes a lot, but impulse and meat tend to do really well. Our recommended products would be anchovies, olives, fried almonds, ham and chorizo.
“We know from the growth of our private clients and from our professional customers that there is a growing appetite from customers for new and innovative ingredients.”
