The ACS has been working with the BRC to tackle the 'scourge of violence and abuse' against shop staff, says chief exec James Lowman

British Retail Consortium (BRC) Shopworkers’ Protection Pledge

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has created the Shopworkers’ Protection Pledge to protect shop staff from violence.

The pledge was signed by 11 MPs and calls for improved legislation. It comes after the BRC found that there are more than 400 incidents of abuse against retail staff per day.

Meanwhile, Usdaw’s petition to protect shopworkers from violence has more than 59,000 signatures.

BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson said: “The legislation meant to protect these workers is not fit for purpose and many of these crimes go unpunished.”

ACS chief executive James Lowman added: “We’ve worked with BRC with the objective of tackling the scourge of violence and abuse against colleagues, and this pledge is another positive. It is vital the government listens.”
