One of the leading voices against the relaxation of Sunday trading hours has resigned from the Labour shadow cabinet.
Angela Eagle stood down as Labour’s shadow business secretary and first secretary of state today, claiming that the UK’s communities had been “severely let down” by Jeremy Corbyn’s “half-hearted” Remain campaign.
In her resignation letter, which was shared on Twitter, she flagged up the salvation of Sunday trading restrictions as one of her proudest achievements.
“We defeated their attempt to sneak through changes to Sunday Trading,” she wrote.
The fight against extended Sunday trading hours was won earlier this year, with Eagle saying at the time: “There is no demand for this from anyone except the Government.”
