EXCLUSIVE: Self-serve protein shake supplier seeking c-store expansion

Protein Life Express has set its sights on a potential rollout in May

A supplier of self-serve protein shake machines is seeking expansion in convenience, with One Stop retailer Dee Sedani being the first to have the equipment.

The tabletop machines from Protein Life Express combine whey, a powdered form of protein, with water for the shakes. Five flavours are available, which include chocolate, vanilla, banana, strawberry and chocolate bueno in 350ml and 450ml cup sizes. Recommended pricing for the small cup ranges from £1.99 to £2.49 offering average margins of 70-76%, while the larger cup offers margins of 50-60% when priced between £2.49 and £2.99.

The larger cups offer 42g of protein, in comparison to 20g from a Grenade Bar for £2.99 and 22g for £2.25 from UFIT.

The machine measures 50m in width, 84cm in height and 64cm in depth, requiring a standard power supply and water feed. It also features full branding from Protein Life Express, as well as a digital screen highlighting the nutritional benefits of increased protein consumption.

Retailers will be able to purchase the machine either outright or on monthly payments. Exact terms for these options are being determined as the firm is targeting May as a potential date for wider rollout.

Multi-site One Stop retailer Dee Sedani became the first retailer to install the machine in his store on 21 February, gathering lots of initial interest from customers. He told Better Retailing: “It’s a high protein product that tastes really good. You can only get fresh protein products like this from a gym, so it’s a good differentiator.”

Food and beverage consultant Paul Johal, who has been working with Protein Life Express, added: “We’re looking at a potential May rollout across convenience. There are a lot of self-serve drinks machines on the market, but this is the first time a healthier option has been made available.

“Each cup is 109 calories. It’s not just for gym-goers, but also caters to those looking to improve their general wellbeing.”
