Sainsbury’s launches ‘On the Go’ format

Sainsbury’s has launched a new food-to-go convenience format targeted at urban areas

Sainsbury's On the Go

The first Sainsbury’s ‘On the Go’ store opened in Mansion House in central London in February, and the range in the 2,200sq ft site caters to busy office workers.

Customers can purchase food such as pizza, pastries, sushi, porridge, coffee and orange juice for consumption out of the shop or at tables placed near the entrance. A ‘grab and go’ station for hot food is also positioned near the entrance. The range in the station is changed three times a day for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.

The store also offers services such as Sainsbury’s SmartShop, which allows customers to scan products on their mobile phone. Click and collect from Argos and Tu Clothing is also available.

Sainsbury’s convenience store sales rise

Nine more On the Go stores are to be opened across city centre locations in Edinburgh, Bristol, Glasgow and London in the coming months. The multiple also said some of its 130 Local stores could be converted to the On the Go format.

Sainsbury’s director of commercial operations Graham Biggart said: “Convenience is a growing part of our business and we have greater capability than ever to truly tailor Local stores to local needs – across our products, formats, services and operations.

“Our new On the Go Mansion House Local is a great example, bringing a new kind of convenience to busy local workers with limited time and delivering the curated range and fast experience that will enable them to get exactly what they want at pace. We’re confident this format will further strengthen our market-leading position in convenience.”
