Retailers stand behind latest Marcus Rashford food poverty campaign

The Premier League footballer's latest demand for extra funding was declined by the government

Free school meal vouchers

Independent retailers have rallied behind Marcus Rashford’s latest campaign to end child food poverty.

The Premier League footballer’s most recent attempt to get free school meals for the nation’s poorest children was dealt a blow this week, as the government refused Rashford’s demands for extra funding to cover the upcoming half-term holiday.

Despite the government’s refusal, independent convenience retailers have stood behind Rashford and are providing their own support to struggling communities.

Jai Singh, of MJs Go Local in Sheffield, said: “We see kids day in and day out who affected all the time and this is a way we can give things back and hopefully raise awareness of the issue.

“We’re working with local sandwich supplier Luncheon Express, who’s going to provide free sandwiches to us. We’re going to put together lunch bags with sandwiches, crisps, a drink and a piece of fruit to give free to the kids on the Monday and Friday of half term.”

Posting on social media, Aman Uppal, of One Stop Mount Nod in Coventry, said: “We support Marcus Rashford and disagree with the House of Commons decision on free school meals. Inspired by our MP Taiwo Owatemi, we’re offering a free lunch in Coventry per child between 11am and 2pm from 26 October to 30 October. Anyone needs this support please message us on our social media.”

Sophie Towers, of One Stop Kibble in Burnley, added: “During October half term Monday to Friday we will be providing packed lunches for local school children who qualify for free school meals. Please message us directly by 5pm Sunday if you require lunches.”

Rashford’s campaign has also received support from other businesses and councils nationwide, who have stepped in to provide free meals. Commenting on the support, Rashford said: “Blown away by news of local businesses stepping up to fill the voucher scheme deficit during the October half term. Selflessness, kindness, togetherness, this is the England I know.”

The support comes as Rashford was awarded an MBE after he pushed for a government u-turn on free school meal vouchers during the summer holidays.
