More than 20,000 businesses have signed up for track and trace, despite retailer concern that technical issues would prevent them registering in time.
Retailers had until 20 May to obtain unique codes under the legislation. The purchase and sale of tobacco is prohibited without them. An HMRC spokesperson confirmed to RN that 20,357 businesses were registered as of 20 May – an 847% increase from registrations on 3 May.
However, retailers had reported operational issues with the online registration forms. De La Rue, the issuer of the codes, had also not provided a response to the issues, according to retailers who contacted the company.
