Retailer tips on handling shoplifting
Think beyond your shop.
To improve your relationship with your local police get more involved in your community. “Move outside of your shop and get involved in local council meetings, or your neighbourhood watch so your police get to know you more,” says Amit.
Keep your shop healthy.
Consider shoplifting in the same way as your health- it’s only going to get worse the longer your leave it. Like your doctor, how can the police help if they don’t know the problem? Don’t feel embarrassed, no matter how small the value, and just let them know because crime is important to you and the local area.
The children really are the future.
Try to educate children about their wrong behaviour and show parents CCTV footage. Susan Connolly discusses suitable punishments with the parents, “do you really think a child would do it again if they know they have to sweep outside my shop in front of their friends before school?”
Think big.
Raj has two CCTV cameras, two large monitors so customers know they are being watched and has employed extra staff during the busiest times. “We had to figure out what worked for us, a local scheme didn’t so we’ve invested in other ways,” he says.
