A Premier retailer has grown his TikTok following by more than 120,000 in eight weeks after going viral due to a ‘Fizzy Chug Challenge’ involving customers.
Jag Singh, of Horsley Hill Premier in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, has seen his followers on the platform grow from 23,000 to 148,000 since posting his first video of the challenge on 1 July. His store’s Facebook page has also seen an influx of followers, growing from 3,000 to 39,000 in the same period.
The ‘Fizzy Chug Challenge’ sees someone try and drink a 2l bottle of a carbonated soft drink in one minute, getting £50 if they succeed. The most popular video has been viewed more than nine million times and has more than 678,000 likes.
How to grow social media engagement
“I had seen a shop doing it on social media, but I thought the video was quite boring, the energy wasn’t there,” he said. “I thought, I’ll release a video the night before saying we’re doing a challenge, if you want to do it come down.” People have visited the shop from as far away as London to take part, according to the retailer.
As well as the impact on social media, Singh says viral success has had a positive effect on his sales. “Loads of people are coming to see the shop and not do the challenge,” he said. “We’ve seen loads of new people coming in, saying they’ve seen us on TikTok, so it’s definitely impacted sales.”
Singh has also taken the challenge ‘on tour’, appearing in nearby towns such as Blyth and inviting people to try to win.
