Letter sent to home secretary demanding action on retail crime

Demands include tougher sentences for assaults on shop staff and a full review into how police respond to violent incidents

Action on shop crime demanded

A letter signed by retailers and groups including the ACS has been sent to the home secretary and other ministers, calling for tougher regulation to tackle retail crime.

The letter was signed by groups including McColl’s Retail Group, Co-op Food and Costcutter. 

It asks for tougher sentences for those who attack shopworkers; a change to the out-of-court disposals system; and a full review into the response of police forces to violent incidents. 

In the same week, NFRN immediate past president Mike Mitchelson made a direct appeal to the home secretary, Sajid Javid, highlighting the need for more action, at a meeting in Cumbria.
