Public Health England urges industry to cut sugar in cakes and chocolate by 20%

Public Health England has published a report that recommends that biscuits, chocolate, sweets and cereals cut sugar by 20%.

Health officials have published sugar limits for biscuits, chocolate bars and cereals, in a bid to tackle childhood obesity.

Public Health England recommends that the food industry lowers sugar levels in existing lines, push healthier products and reduce product sizes to cut sugar by 20% by 2020.

The guidelines form part of its plan to remove 200,000 tonnes of sugar a year. They apply to retailers and manufacturers, as well as cafes.

The news follows Nestlé Confectionery's announcement earlier this month that the company will remove 10% of its sugar by 2018.
