Independent retailers are considered more important than local pubs and bank branches, according to PayPoint.
A survey by the EPoS company found the average basket spend through independent convenience stores last month had risen year on year from £5.61 to £7.47.

More than a fifth (22%) of those surveyed relied on their local convenience store during lockdown, while 27% said they would shop more at their nearest independent retailer once restrictions end.
Thirty-one per cent said they had met new people at their local shop, while 17% said they were on first-name terms with their nearest retailer.
