The government has ignored independent convenience stores in its U-turn on scrapping free school meal vouchers during the summer.
Last week, the government said it would provide 1.3 million children with weekly vouchers worth £15 following pressure from footballer Marcus Rashford.
The vouchers can be used at Aldi, Asda, M&S, McColl’s, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose, but exclude independent retailers.
Pontefract retailer Ken Singh said: “The nearest supermarket for families on my store’s estate is 20 minutes away.”
