Nisa reacts to ‘tough market’ with more large packs, price cuts and changes to price benchmarking against rivals

Nisa said growing its large and family pack ranges would support squeezed shoppers while price changes would make its stores more competetive.

Nisa is expanding its value range with a roster of larger packs and price cuts, allowing its retailers to make bigger baskets while supporting customers with better value options.

Announcing the move, a spokesperson for the wholesaler said it was adding 28 new products to its ‘bigger pack better value’ range, with a ‘heavy focus’ on non-edible lines such as personal care, household and petfood. Nisa said: “All will be traded at an Every Day Low Price, or as part of our competitive promotional strategy.”

Twenty Seven of the 28 new products are already live, including Weetabix 72 packs, Regina Gentle Soft Roll 32 packs, Fairy Fabric Conditioner Original 80 washes and Walkers Variety 32 pack.

On its ‘family’ product ranges, the price of 135 lines is being cut, including Heinz soups, Pringles and Dolmio Sauces. Nisa described the products as the leading brands that shoppers buy most often. The reductions will go live on 6 July.

“These changes have been made to support you to remain competitive and offer your shoppers great value in this tough market,” said Nisa.

EXCLUSIVE: Further pricing changes revealed

In a message to stores, seen by Better Retailing, Nisa also revealed changes to how it benchmarks and adjusts its pricing, Currently, the wholesaler compares prices across four rival wholesaler, but from 6 July, it will no longer benchmark against one of the four wholesalers, claiming that the removal is because the un-named cash and carry operator is not ‘a natural competitor’ to Nisa.

The message added: “As a result of this change, you will see some price changes across both the front and back basket from 6 July.”

Nisa is also reducing how often it benchmarks its prices on the most important lines, from once per week to once every two weeks. Prices on less important lines will be reviewed every 21 days with a further 28 days notice of any changes.

The wholesaler also revealed it will no longer adjust prices where the change is less than 10p per case, or the line sells less than 100 cases per week. It said this is in order to ‘to limit the number of price changes’. Exceptions will be made for supplier increases linked to the CPI rate of inflation.

In what Nisa described as an ‘RRP rebalance’ based on retailer feedback, Nisa has aligned the recommended retail prices of 4,000 branded lines to ‘a market leading competitor for both convenience and supermarket stores’

Nisa also revealed its timeline for upcoming wholesale and reail price changes. On 20 July around 500 non-food and licensed products will see price changes, followed by around 650 grocery lines on 27 July and 300 soft drinks, fresh and frozen products on 3 August.
