NFSP appeals for help in contacting Horizon scandal victims

With the government's compensation scheme now open, the NFSP is urging subpostmasters affected by the Horizon scandal to come forward

The National Federation of Subpostmasters (NFSP) has urged past and present subpostmasters impacted by the Horizon scandal to come forward, in a bid to have their previous convictions quashed.

In a communication sent to members, and seen by Better Retailing, the trade body said: “The NFSP is urgently calling on all members past and present to ask for help in contacting postmasters, managers and employed staff who were convicted of fraud, theft and other related charges over the past 25 years.

“There is every chance those colleagues may be able to have their convictions quashed/pardoned and receive significant compensation. However, if they or their surviving families do not know, then they cannot benefit.

“Please help us contact victims or their surviving families. Howe + Co Solicitors is providing free legal advice to current and former NFSP members on this issue.”

Settlements

The message from the NFSP comes as the government launched its Horizon Convictions Redress Scheme last month.

For subpostmasters who had previously had their convictions overturned under the Post Office Offences Act, successful applicants can choose to have a fixed settlement of £600,000.

However, those who believe their losses exceeded the initial £600,000 compensation fee offered can choose to have their claim assessed further by a team of dedicated case workers.
