NewstrAid launches general hardship fund

The fund will offer grants of up to £250 per household

Industry charity NewstrAid has introduced a new general hardship fund to provide financial assistance to individuals in the newstrade industry facing difficulties with essential household expenses.

The fund will offer grants of up to £250 per household, helping to alleviate the burden of rising bills and everyday expenses for anyone who has worked in the sale or distribution of newspapers and magazines in the UK.

This initiative builds on the success of NewstrAid’s cost of living crisis fund, which offered support from 2022 to 2024. All grants are non-repayable and will not affect any existing benefits.

Katie Babooram, welfare manager at NewstrAid, emphasised the vital role of charity support in preventing individuals from “falling deeper into financial hardship”.

She added: “Every day, we hear from people who are struggling just to cover basic living costs. Our new general hardship fund is designed to provide immediate assistance to those in the newstrade community who need help the most.”

Babooram also noted that the recent Spring Statement, which introduced “further cuts to essential benefits,” has left many individuals facing “even greater financial strain”.

She said: “We hope this fund will act as a much-needed safety net for those struggling to make ends meet.”
