New online magazine Shop+ to pay stores for every reader

The Shop+ PoS package also advertises a regular £1,000 cash prize for readers, and £500 for the shop associated with the winner

Shop owners will earn money every time their customers read Shop+, the new digital magazine that encourages people to spend more in their local stores.

By signing up for free and displaying a poster, shop owners can immediately start earning 10p from every shopper who opens the magazine on their phone.

Shop+ is run by Better Retailing’s publisher, Newtrade Media, and is working with brands including Asahi, Coca- Cola Europacific Partners, Heineken, Hell Energy and Mondelez International.

The posters and cards included in the PoS package also advertise a regular £1,000 prize draw for shoppers, providing another reason for them to visit the store regularly and access the magazine.

As well as the £1,000 cash prize for one reader of each edition, the shop associated with the winning reader will receive a £500 bonus. Funds earned will be paid into the bank accounts of participating stores every three months.

Tests by Newtrade Media in England, Scotland and Wales found an average of 18 shoppers per store, per day scanned a poster for a much smaller cash prize.

Even at half this rate, Shop+ would be worth nearly £330 per year in profit per store. A separate survey of 400 people by Newtrade Media found two-thirds would read the digital magazine if they found it at their local shop.

How Shop+ will benefit independent stores

Explaining the benefits for shops, Parin Gohil, managing director of Newtrade Media, told Better Retailing: “Nearly every supermarket chain has its own magazine because it helps to grow their sales. Independent shops deserve the same opportunity, and they deserve to be rewarded for the services they bring to their community, including Shop+.

“That’s why stores that work with Shop+ will profit twice – 10p commission for every reader and greater sales from more loyal shoppers.”

Inside each edition, readers will find recipes using only products found in most independent convenience stores, as well as news about new products also available in local shops.

Other topics include money saving, travel, quizzes, TV and film.

Stores can also use Shop+ to convert their social media followers into profit, with assets for use on Facebook and other platforms also available. Natalie Lightfoot, owner of Londis Solo Convenience in Glasgow, was one of the trial retailers.

She advised: “We promoted it on social media and had a massive amount of people taking part just from that.”
