Costcutter retailer Kopi Kalanathan has launched a new hot food to go concept, generating additional weekly sales of £4,000.
Kalanathan unveiled Breaks at his Kirk Sandall store in Doncaster in November, with branding presented prominently on the store’s exterior.
With more than 100 products including hot drinks, sandwiches, pasties, cookies, brownies and potato wedges, Breaks is focused on serving customers within five minutes.
Prices include £2.99 for a Cornish pasty, £2.50 for a brownie and hot drinks starting from £1.69. Meal deals are also available, including a sandwich and hot or cold drink for £3.75.
Speaking to Better Retailing about Breaks, Kalanathan explained the concept is helping to generate £4,000 in additional weekly sales since its launch.
He added: “It’s my own brand and it was in the planning stages for six to seven months. We had a dessert bar previously, but it didn’t work out quite so well. We have a lot workers who come into the store and they don’t like waiting around.
“The idea behind Breaks was to better serve this demographic and ensure they can be out within minutes upon ordering.
“We make about 40% margin per product, but we’re more focused on volume rather than profit with Breaks. Nowadays, many customers want affordable prices.
“The majority of products are produced fresh on-site and we’ve also been working with many different suppliers. The idea is to roll Breaks out to my other stores, depending on how it performs.”
