Ireland have become internet stars after releasing a comedy video to raise money for charity.
Shot inside the store in Moneymore, County Londonderry, the video shows staff members miming and dancing to Wham!’s ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’.
However, the real purpose of the video – which was shared on Moneymore Spar’s Facebook page – is to encourage donations to the in-store fundraiser, with proceeds going to the Cancer Fund for Children.
Retail Express spoke to Camilla O’Neill, supervisor at Moneymore Spar, who worked with fellow supervisor Conor Wilson on the fund-raising strategy.
“Last year we made videos for Halloween, Easter, Valentine’s Day and Christmas, and our customers kept coming into the store and asking when the next one would be,” she said. “But this is entirely different from what we’ve done before in terms of fundraising.”
The latest video advertises the details of the raffle, including the £350-worth of prizes up for grabs, and has been viewed nearly 10,000 times.
“The raffle draw will be held at the end of the month,” O’Neill said. “We’ve got [Belfast station] Radio Q behind us. They held an interview with us and are potentially going to broadcast the results of the draw.”
She added that in the first week of sales, the store sold 100 raffle tickets.
“Our customers are all 100% behind us,” she said. “It’s been good for business too, as the initiative has brought new people into the store.”
O’Neill added that the store is considering producing a video to support Children in Need later this year.
