Concern in Wales as minimum unit pricing approaches

Welsh retailers have expressed concerns over losing customers who may cross the border to buy cheaper alcohol once minimum unit pricing (MUP) is rolled out.

Mark Dudden, who runs a WHSmith Local in Cardiff, told RN: “Bristol is only half an hour from Cardiff and, with the Severn Bridge no longer charging a toll, it’s so easy for people to get there.”

Andrew Johnson, owner of Dafarn Newydd Store, added: “It’s already a battle, with people travelling to big supermarkets rather than using small stores, and now it’s going to happen even more.”

Despite the Welsh Assembly promising that the policy would be launched this summer, Dudden confirmed there is still no official start date for MUP. “It will be late summer, if anything,” he said.
