Hundreds of jobs are to be cut at Menzies Parcels, but parent company Menzies Distribution has promised there will be no impact on news deliveries.
Menzies Parcels employs around 270 people. It provides a courier delivery service across the north of Scotland, covering the Highlands, islands, Argyll and Aberdeenshire. It has 15 depots in Scotland, Fort William, Inverness and Oban. The BBC reported earlier this month that staff had been told in a letter that Menzies Parcels would cease operations in February, and stated its last day of business would be 29 February.

The cuts are being made after two years of “significant losses” by Menzies Parcels. A spokesperson for Menzies Distribution told Better Retailing: “Our commitment remains to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the newstrade end-to-end supply chain and service excellence for all our newstrade customers.”
In September, Menzies Distribution announced plans to ‘accelerate’ its diversification into other markets, while vowing to keep the newstrade its priority. In its annual results for the year ending 31 December 2022, Menzies highlighted plans to ramp up efforts to find new opportunities outside of the newstrade, especially in ‘final mile out-of-home delivery’.
Those results revealed a £28.1m fall in revenue to £915.5m. Operating profits dropped even more sharply to £3.7m, £8.9m lower than the year before.
