Lewisham retailer marks shop’s 40th anniversary with store-exclusive pale ale

Just 92 cases of the Torridon Mosaic Pale Ale have been produced, available exclusively from the Torridon Road Convenience site

South London retailer Kaual Patel has launched a limited-edition pale ale available only in his Torridon Convenience store in Hither Green to mark the site’s 40th anniversary.

The Torridon Mosaic Pale Ale is Patel’s third collaboration with Brockley Brewery, following two lagers produced in the past year.

It carries a 4.2% ABV and costs £3.49 for a 330ml can, or three for £9.

Made with Mosaic hops, its design is inspired by a mosaic that was laid in front of the shop’s entrance which depicts local landmarks and was made with the help of Patel’s symbol Nisa’s Making a Difference Locally (MADL) charity.

Just 92 cases of the pale ale have been produced, and the cans are available solely from the shop.

“Customers love that we have something with our own branding on it,” said Patel. “We’ve been working with Brockley for a long time and we wanted something close to our heart.

“The beauty is these are bespoke to us. I’ve got customers who pick up the cans to keep on their mantelpiece. It wasn’t about making a huge profit on it, it was just something fun to do.”

Patel officially launched the beer at an event on 3 May celebrating his store’s birthday. “Once it’s gone, it’s gone,” he added. “The whole point was to do a one-off piece to celebrate the mosaic and our 40th year and any limited edition always goes well. If it became regularly available, it would lose its finesse.”

The event featured stands from Patel’s local and specialist suppliers including Hatch Mansfield, Fourpure, Magic Rock and Westerham breweries, and Cook.

Patel says he is looking at working with other local suppliers on bespoke products, perhaps related to seasonal events.
