‘Latte levy’ prep: retailers go for reusable cups

Forward-thinking independent retailers are already using combustible or reusable cups as politicians call for the introduction of a “latte levy” to tackle waste.

Forward-thinking independent retailers are already using compostable or reusable cups as politicians call for the introduction of a “latte levy” to tackle waste.

The levy call came from the Environmental Audit Committee, which noted that 2.5bn cups are thrown away in the UK every year, with few being recycled.

But some, such as Mital Morar, of Ancoats General Store, are ahead of any Government legislation.

“We use combustible cups rather than the ones that are difficult to recycle and we promote people to bring their own reusable cups, giving them a discount. We also sell reusable cups,” he told Retail Express.

He added that the government should go after coffee chains who are slower to react, rather than targeting pioneering independents who were “already doing something about it”.

Dean Holborn of Holborns in Redhill and South Nutfield, Surrey, said it would be likely to look into reusable options.

“Any levy or tax would affect the business and hit the bottom line, but I understand the concerns. We will look into our own branded reusable cups. We’ve done the same thing with branded reusable bags, so why not for this too?”

Starbucks is trialling its own 5p levy in London locations, while other chains are increasingly offering discounts to customers who bring in reusable cups.

“It will affect sales, but if that’s the way it’s going to go, then maybe there’s something we can do ourselves,” Holborn said.
