The move is part of the company’s wider expansion of its Grab & Go platform

Subway has confirmed it will be rolling out its new sandwich vending machines to independent stores in the UK in the near future.

The “interactive, fully unattended” smart fridge was unveiled at the University in California in September, with fresh stock added daily by the franchisee’s nearby restaurant.

Using artificial intelligence, shoppers can talk directly to the machine and ask for any of the products inside, using a contactless transaction.

The move is part of the company’s wider expansion of its Grab & Go platform.

Subway has revealed it is already seeing “strong interest across its system of franchisees interested in expanding their portfolios with smart fridges”.

When asked whether it would make the vending machines available to convenience stores in the UK, a spokesperson said: “Internationally, Subway’s flexible business model and ability to operate almost anywhere is enabling franchisees across all regions to introduce non-traditional concepts designed for convenience and efficiency.

“As Subway continues to expand its presence globally, bringing on new master franchisees and country developers who are interested in testing new formats based on their market experience, non-traditional locations will increasingly make up a significant portion of future restaurants.”
