PayPoint has warned retailers to remain “vigilant” about a fake cash pay-out voucher scam circulating in independent stores.

Over the weekend, non-profit organisation Retailers Against Crime issued a warning message claiming it had been made aware of a scam relating to PayPoint.

It said individuals were producing a voucher at the counter, which when scanned generated an instant £250 cash pay-out. A PayPoint spokesperson told Better Retailing it was aware of it and its fraud team were “investigating alongside the relevant authorities as a matter of priority”.

They said: “Cash out is an essential front-line service for UK communities and our retailer partners should continue to process legitimate cash out vouchers that are brought into their stores.

“These fake vouchers are not able to be processed on PayPoint terminals, but retailers should remain vigilant and always trust what their terminal says when scanning. We would encourage any retailer who thinks they have been presented with a fake voucher to take a clear photo of it and contact us as soon as possible.”
