Mondelez withdraws popular chocolate box six weeks before Christmas over taste concerns

Retailers told to remove Milk Tray 180g and 360g products over taste concerns

Cadbury Milk Tray has become the latest confectionery product to fall victim to a temporary withdrawal, as Mondelez urges stores to remove certain formats over taste concerns.

In a note sent to stores this week, and seen by Better Retailing, supplier Mondelez told retailers to remove Milk Tray 180g and 360g products from their shelves immediately.

“This is due to a food quality issue, whereby the cardboard packaging is in some instances affecting the taste and therefore enjoyment of the chocolates,” it read. “We believe this is the right thing to do as the quality of our products is vitally important to us.”

The firm went on to reinforce that this does not impact any other Mondelez, or Cadbury product variants in the UK or Ireland. Other Milk Tray formats, specifically 78g and 530g are not affected and can continue to be sold.

The news comes a week after Mars Wrigley announced it was temporarily delisting Bounty Dark due to “operational reasons” and claims from retailers and wholesalers that 2022 has been “the worst year for availability”.
