Asda permanently closes Deal Depot cash and carry

The site was opened in 2019

Asda has permanently closed its Deal Depot cash and carry concept in Bristol.

Staff at the supermarket confirmed the closure to Better Retailing, but did not confirm the reason. Based next to the multiple’s Patchway superstore, the Deal Depot opened as a trial at the end of 2019.

Operating similarly to rival Costco, the 20,000sq ft site traded to businesses and members of the public with no membership fee required. It sold products in bulk size which were unavailable in Asda’s own supermarkets, such as 5L bottles of bleach. Other products sold by the Deal Depot included alcohol, confectionery, fresh meat, toiletries and soft drinks.

On a Facebook page for the site, the last post advertising promotions at the branch was made in August 2021. The supermarket had extended the parts of the concept into 10 existing branches last year, offering bulk quantities on selected lines.

An Asda spokesperson said: “We launched our Deal Depot bulk-buy store trial in 2019 in order to learn from the concept and test new approaches to retail with customers. This trial has now come to an end and Deal Depot colleagues have been offered roles within our Patchway store.”
