Independent retailer launches freeze dried sweets wholesale business

Store owners stocking the products are generating several thousands of pounds in monthly sales

An independent retailer is now distributing their own brand freeze dried sweets to other small shops, following major success selling the products in their own store.

Vas Vekaria, of Kegs ‘n’ Blades in Bolton, started the wholesale operation for his Fantastic Freeze sweets this month, delivering to stores across the UK. The RRP for each 50g bag is £4, with a £2 wholesale price. The minimum order value is £150 for free delivery, with mixed starter packs containing best sellers available.

Other retailers have already commented positively on Vekaria’s service, praising the speed of delivery, pricing and popularity with customers.

Vekaria told Better Retailing: “It’s been a manic few week and I’m looking at doubling the number of machines I use to produce the freeze dried sweets to four. Freeze dried sweets are the latest US confectionery trend and they’re flying off the shelf.”

Vekaria began producing and selling freeze dried sweets in his own store last month after initially sourcing the products from a third-party wholesaler. The sweets are produced at the back of Vekaria’s store using a freeze dryer produced by US manufacturer Harvest Right.

However, retailers have also been advised to check any supplier of freeze-dried sweets have followed proper legal procedure.

This includes putting a batch code on packs, sending them to test for allergens and expiry information, ensuring they have food safety licenses to prove they meet manufacturing standards, and product insurance.

Retailers previously told Better Retailing they were generating several thousands of pounds in sales per month from the viral product.
