Leave the car at home and shop locally. That was the message yesterday for national Walk and Shop Day, an initiative promoted by the My Shop is Your Shop campaign.
The campaign aims to spread the message that walking to the local shop enables consumers to buy fresh every day, and reduces the waste associated with the weekly supermarket shop, as well as keeping money in the local community. It’s also good for your health!
Independent retailers across the country were involved in the initiative, including Mr Patel of Metro Food and Wine, who described the day as a “great idea”, adding “there’s a lot of competition in my area so it’s very important that I’m able to tell my customers why they should come and shop here – and the messages conveyed via Walk and Shop Day are helping me do this.”
Sales development representatives from PepsiCo were also out in force to support the day by giving out free samples of Tropicana and £2 breakfast meal deals of Tropicana and Quaker Oats-so-Simple pots.
PepsiCo Impulse Sales Director, Jon Kyle, said “We are delighted to support an event which raises awareness of the benefits of shopping locally and encourages the public to visit their local store more often. Local shoppers have saved money on petrol today, reduced rush hour congestion and pollution, and showed their support for independent shops in their community.”
