Government in retail crime crackdown

The murder of London newsagent Ravi Katharkamar has spurred political action on retail crime.

London’s deputy mayor for policing, Sophie Linden, revealed plans for a meeting of local businesses this month to share crime reduction practices.

The Home Office has also launched a call for evidence on violence and abuse toward shop staff.

NFRN national president Mike Mitchelson said: “It’s important that the scale of the problem
is understood.”

MP David Hanson told RN he secured a three-hour parliamentary retail crime debate on 11 April, to press the government to do more to protect shops.

Met Police deputy commissioner Stephen House had claimed ‘shop workers face more abuse than police officers’, according to Mitchelson.
