Gander food-waste discount app introduced in Nisa Local

Since its launch, Gander has prevented 1.7 million food items from going to waste, equivalent to 1,800 tonnes of CO2

The newly opened Nisa Local on Oxford Street is the first merchant in Barrow-in-Furness to partner with Gander.

Gander is a mobile app which allows local users to purchase food at a discount that would otherwise have gone to waste.

Reduced-to-clear products are labelled with a yellow sticker indicating their new price. Items range from ready meals, fresh fruit and vegetables, and baked goods, featuring discounts of over 50%.

Users of the app can view any reduced items on their phones before they purchase and collect the items they want at the tills in store. Gander also updates in real time, meaning that sold products are removed from the app.

Speaking on the partnership, owners of the Nisa Local, Karen and Paul Stephenson, said: “Using the Gander app helps to highlight our reductions to the local community and helps to reduce food waste and conserve our resources and space in local landfills.”

Gander also provides a proprietary analytics platform, Ganderlytics. The platform measures the performance of in-store reductions and provides insights into wastage.

Retailers gain insight into their customers through data that reveals how people engage with their stores and what products they are looking for.

Co-founder of Gander, Ashley Osborne, said: “We are so pleased to welcome onboard the Nisa Local store on Oxford Street and see them embrace the benefits of the Gander app. More and more retailers are understanding the wider importance of cutting waste; it’s what customers expect and makes good business sense.”
