The 19th of May was a special day for Singh’s stores in Sheffield as we were the key sponsor of a charity football event hosted by Sheffield United at their Brammall Lane stadium. The Singh’s Charity Cup was a competition between two teams from Cadburys, a team from Singh’s and another from Booker.
We put on the game with the help of craft to raise money for Macmillian Cancer support.
The gates opened at 11.30 and hundreds of people were in the stands for the first match which kicked off at 12 noon. This was between the Singh’s team and the Cadburys Purple 11. After the first 20 minute half the score was 0-0, but the pace quickened in the second half with Singh’s scoring twice and Cadburys although initially going behind scored four goals to win comfortably. The second game was equally hard fought between Booker and the Cadburys White with the White’s winning 2-0
After the initial two games the Bramall Lane pitch was set up for four simultaneous 7 aside games. The under 7 year old teams were from Beighton Magpies and Sheffield Rangers and the under 8 year olds were from Ecclesfield Spartans and Norton Lees. All of the junior clubs are sponsored by Singh’s Premier. It was great to see the enthusiasm that these children invested in their games.
The Singh’s Charity Cup final was a goal filled match between the two Cadburys teams and the Whites came out on top winning 4-2 after a thrilling match. The third place match was won by Singh’s 1-0.
Presentations were made by Kell Brook, the Sheffield based boxer. All of the children that played were presented with a certificate, a chocolate gold medal and a goody bag. The Charity Cup was presented to the winning Cadburys team.
Rob Turner, fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in Sheffield, said: “Over 2,200 people in Sheffield are diagnosed with cancer each year and in 2012 we’re hoping to raise £400,000 in the region to fund both new and existing posts and services in Sheffield.”
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in organising and participating in the charity football match. The money raised will help us to continue to provide practical, medical and financial support to those affected by cancer, and push for better cancer care.”
