First Amazon Go convenience store in UK set to open

The first store is set to open in West London

The first Amazon Go convenience store in the UK is set to open in London in March.

According to reports, the internet giant will open the branch in Ealing, West London, adding to 25 stores already in the USA. The brand was first opened in Seattle in 2018 and has no checkouts.

Upon entering the store, the customer scans their mobile phone. Hidden sensors are then used to track items customers place in their baskets and charges are made automatically via the customer’s Amazon account when they leave the store. The customer is not required to take their phone out at all when they shop. Although there are no staff to take payment, employees are on hand to assist with queries.

It has been claimed Morrisons is working with Amazon to supply the store. The multiple has an existing relationship with the company for its online Fresh home delivery service. Amazon also owns premium grocery chain Wholefoods and is reportedly aiming to open 30 more Go stores throughout the UK.
