An independent convenience store in Southport was looted during a far-right riot in Southport, with Merseyside Police confirming that an investigation is underway.
Footage shared on social media showed those involved in the violence attempting to break down the door of Windsor Mini Mart in the town as fires burned nearby on the evening of 30 July.
The shop had closed early and was boarded up at the time of the incident in an attempt to protect it from damage. Speaking to Better Retailing on the morning after, team members at the store said efforts to clean up and repair the damage were underway.
Speaking to LBC, shop owner Chanaka Balasuryla said neighbours had come to the shop to help clean up on Wednesday morning. He also told the BBC he estimated more than £10,000 of stock was stolen, mainly cigarettes and alcohol. A verified GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for repairs to the store.
Despite police confirming that the alleged attacker was born in Cardiff, protesters gathered outside a mosque in Southport the following day blaming asylum seekers and chanting Islamophobic statements. Due to the alleged attacker being under 18, the detained suspect has not been identified.
Police vehicles were torched, officers injured, local property destroyed, and the shop looted in the following rioting.
In a statement confirming the attack on the independent convenience store, Merseyside Police said: “This is completely unacceptable. We’re gathering evidence and those responsible will be brought to justice.”
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also promised swift action, stating: “Those who have hijacked the vigil for the victims with violence and thuggery have insulted the community as it grieves… They will feel the full force of the law.”
