More independent retailers are to receive access to an app designed to improve the shopping experience for customers as part of a major symbol group rollout.

Loyalty firm Ubamarket has made the rollout possible by integrating its app with several major EPoS providers. The company already has a presence in some Central England Co-op, Spar and Budgens stores and founder Will Broome told Better Retailing the expansion will give it access to Nisa, Costcutter and Go Local sites. Two stores within the James Retail convenience group are also to trial the Ubamarket app in January.

“The pandemic has accelerated the acceptance of smartphone apps for everyday use,” Broome added. “More customers visiting convenience stores are willing to use apps for their shopping.”

Customers who use the app in participating stores are able to create their own shopping list, see a live basket by scanning products, view promotions, earn loyalty points and pay for their items through the phone. Retailers can also change the design of the app to match their store’s branding.

The app also enables customers to view nutritional information of products, while a click and collect function is to be added.
