Symbol groups urge stores to comply with vape recycling laws

The OPSS has the power to prosecute and fine retailers up to £5,000 if they do not comply with vape recycling regulations

Symbol groups are warning retailers to comply with vape recycling regulations before the end of March 2023 to avoid prosecution.

In a newsletter sent out to Premier retailers this week by Booker, and seen by Better Retailing, stores were told to expect ramped up enforcement from the end of March to ensure they are offering shoppers a free of charge, safe recycling point for vapes and e-cigarettes.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) have the power to prosecute and fine retailers up to £5,000 at a magistrates court, or an unlimited fine from a crown court, if they do not comply with Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations.

Businesses selling less than £100,000 worth of electrical equipment, including disposable vapes, per year were advised to join the distributor take-back scheme, and those selling more than £100,000 were told to provide a take back service.
