Nisa has delisted more than 100 top-selling chilled lines in Northern Ireland, potentially affecting demand and sales for its retailers in the region.
The firm removed the 134 lines at the start of October, blaming the Brexit-imposed Windsor Framework for its decision. Under the latest phase of the agreement, all milk and dairy products moving into Northern Ireland must be individually labelled.
Products impacted by the delists include top-selling convenience lines such as Müller yoghurts, Grenade protein shakes, Frijj and Arla UHT milk.
Neil Bell, of Nisa Summerhill Road in Belfast, has been impacted by the recent delists. He said: “The number of delists is massive and we’ll start potentially looking at other suppliers to help fill the gaps.
“We’ll be missing some really popular products, such as Müller and Frijj. We stock many variants of Müller yoghurts. Some customers buy cheaper brands, but these always sell well and there will be a financial impact. It’s tough as well, because we do have ordering targets to meet with Nisa.
“There a few supermarkets nearby and we might end up losing customers to those rival stores if they have better availability than us.”
Nisa was also criticised by retailers for not providing updates on replacements for the delisted lines, despite promising to do so.
Suppliers and wholesalers respond to the impact of the Windsor Framework
Other retailers and wholesalers told Better Retailing they had no issue with chilled availability caused by the Windsor Framework.
A senior boss of a major wholesale distributor into Northern Ireland added they had not experienced any issues with chilled availability relating to the Windsor Framework’s latest phase.
A Nisa spokesperson said: “We are working closely with suppliers to explore viable alternatives for delisted products in Northern Ireland, following the introduction of further labelling requirements under the Northern Ireland Retail Movement Scheme.
“We’ve confirmed a recommended replacement for almost 40% of these products to our NI customers, and we will continue to keep retailers informed as the range is updated, doing all we can to minimise the impact.”
An Arla spokesperson said: “The introduction of new labelling requirements on 1 October under the Windsor Framework has led to a limited number of products being currently unavailable in Northern Ireland. We are working to ensure that any disruption faced by customers is kept to a minimum.”
A Mondelez spokesperson added: “Grenade protein shakes are temporarily unavailable in Northern Ireland, which could affect retailers until mid-to-late November. Grenade works closely with all its retailers to ensure shoppers can enjoy its products.”
A Yazoo spokesperson added its products were still available in Northern Ireland through “normal routes”.A UK government spokesperson said:
Commenting further on the regulation, a UK government spokesperson said: “The Windsor Framework allows for these goods to move from Great Britain to Northern Ireland through the Northern Ireland Retail Movement Scheme (NIRMS). Many retailers are continuing to move these goods under the new rules.
“We remain committed to implementing the Windsor Framework in good faith, and this includes establishing compliance with NIRMS.”
