A Liverpool retailer who fell victim to a £22,000 employee theft over two months has called on others to check their staff’s cash dealings.

Syeda Bukhari, who runs Orrell Park Post Office, told Retail Express: “Although I had great training from the Post Office when I took over the premises last March, the one thing I wasn’t taught about was checking staff’s cash.”

Thinking it was the auditor’s duty, Bhukari did not check employee Roxy Barton’s cash handling. Barton stole the money unnoticed until a suspicious Bhukari did check and noticed the discrepancy.

Barton has now been ordered to pay the money back in full to her former employer.
