Cash and carries in England and Scotland are to improve payment services at the till, while helping retailers manage their cashflow.
Payments firm EchoPay has teamed up with several wholesalers, including United Wholesale Scotland, across the regions for its open banking service. When a retailer is at the till, they can open an associated app and pay for their goods from their bank accounts in seconds.
EchoPay chief executive James Ward told Better Retailing United Wholesale Scotland is the first of many partners, with other national wholesalers with depots based across the Midlands, north of England and Scotland set to become partners. The service can also be used to pay for goods remotely when a retailer is not at a depot.

He added: “For the retailer, it makes payment more convenient. The cashier can press a button at the till and the service becomes available on a retailer’s phone. They can just press a couple of buttons to complete their payment.
“It is more secure because a retailer doesn’t have to share personal information such as card details.”
United Wholesale Scotland finance director, David Milton said: “At United Wholesale Scotland we’re always looking for ways to improve the service we offer to our customers, and integrating EchoPay is a significant step forward.”
