The average supermarket basket spend has declined year on year, despite total spend and transaction numbers growing.
Barclaycard figures for the month ending 19 January show a 1.3% drop in the average supermarket transaction value. However, the market performed ahead of clothing (-1.6%), restaurants (-2.3%) and the airline industry (-4.2%).
In transaction volumes, supermarkets achieved an 8.1% increase during the same period. Total spend also grew by 6.8%.
Barclaycard director Esme Harwood said: “Consumers will continue to prioritise value for money, as many have concerns about potential price increases on essentials.”
