Supermarkets could be asked to legally enforce social distancing, one-way systems, limits on customer numbers and face coverings.
Although the guidelines are not official law, a government source told The Times this could change if compliance is not improved. They said: “We need to make sure supermarkets in particular are following the rules. We’ll be looking at whether the right protections are in place, including social distancing and customers wearing masks.”

When asked by Sky News whether supermarkets must be responsible for enforcing the rules, vaccines minister Nadhim Sahawi said: “The most important thing to do now is enforcement and compliance when people are going to supermarkets.”
